Packing guidelines
When one of your originals sells, you pack it and we book the courier. Good packing is what gets your work to its new home in the state it left your studio, and it is a condition for the insurance to pay out. These guidelines are part of the Artist Terms. If a work doesn't fit them, write to us before you pack.
When a work sells
- Within 48 hours: confirm the sale and that the work is ready to travel.
- Within 5 working days: the work is packed and ready for collection.
- Send us the packed dimensions (L × W × H in cm), the weight in kg, and two photos: the work just before it goes in, and the closed parcel.
- We book the courier, send you the label and tell you when it will be collected.
What you need
- Glassine or acid-free paper for anything touching the surface of the work
- Cardboard corner protectors
- Bubble wrap, always with the bubbles facing outwards and never directly on the surface
- Foam board or hardboard of at least 1 cm, for front and back
- A new double-wall box, or a wooden crate for large, heavy or glazed works (see below)
- Strong packing tape
Never use newspaper, packing peanuts, bin bags, or tape directly on the work or the frame.
Paintings on canvas or panel
- Make sure the paint and varnish are fully dry.
- Wrap the work in glassine. Tape only the glassine to itself, never to the work.
- Add corner protectors, then a thin plastic sheet against moisture.
- Wrap in two layers of bubble wrap, or three if any side is over 100 cm.
- Sandwich between two sheets of foam board, 5 to 8 cm larger than the work on every side.
- Place it upright in the box with 5 to 8 cm of space all round, and fill the space so nothing moves.
Framed works with glass or acrylic
- Prefer acrylic (plexiglass) for works that travel. If the frame has glass, put a grid of low-tack masking tape on the glass, so that if it breaks the pieces stay in place.
- Wrap as for paintings: glassine, corner protectors, plastic, then three layers of bubble wrap and foam board on both sides.
- Glazed works larger than 45 × 60 cm travel in a wooden crate. Write to us before you pack.
Works on paper
- Flat: between two sheets of glassine, held in paper corner pockets on a sheet of foam board, then a second sheet of foam board on top. Then plastic, bubble wrap and a box.
- Rolled (only if the work allows it): between glassine, rolled image facing outwards around an inner tube, wrapped in bubble wrap and shipped in a sturdy tube of at least 10 cm across, with capped ends.
Objects, sculpture and works with light
- Wrap the work in several layers of bubble wrap, with extra protection on anything that sticks out.
- Use a double box: the work in a first box with at least 5 cm of padding all round, and that box inside a second one with the same space.
- For works with lighting or other electrical parts: pack the driver, cable and plug separately in the same parcel, and include the instructions for use. The work must carry the CE marking.
- Mark the outside "Fragile" and "This side up" with arrows on every side.
Large or heavy works
A work travels in a wooden crate, and we agree the shipping method with you first, when:
- any side is over 120 cm, or
- the packed weight is over 25 kg, or
- it is a glazed work larger than 45 × 60 cm.
Fasten crate lids with screws, never with glue or nails, and mark which side opens.
What goes in the box
- The ODE card we send you, with the title of the work
- The certificate of authenticity, if the work isn't signed
- Care instructions, if the work needs them
No invoices, prices, price lists or promotional material, from you or from anyone else.
Labels and collection
- Close the box with tape in an H-pattern on the top and the bottom.
- Stick the courier label on the largest side, and remove or cover any old labels.
- Keep the parcel indoors and dry until it is collected.
If a buyer returns a work
Buyers who bought online may withdraw within 14 days of receiving the work. Pack so the packaging can be used again: no glue, and a box that opens neatly. If a work comes back, check it and tell us within 3 working days whether it returned in the condition it left, with photos.
